Course Requirements

The basic courses and other requirements to have the doctarate degree for students starting to PhD Program with a Master of Science degree  are given below:

    • 8 courses (24 credits),
    • PhD Qualifying Examination,
    • PhD Thesis and related courses

The basic courses and other requirements to have the PhD degree for students starting to Doctorate Program with only  BS degree  are given below:

    • 15 courses (45 credits),
    • PhD Qualifying Examination,
    • PhD Thesis and related courses

The students accepted to Neuroscience and Neurotechnology, NSNT, Doctorate Program must take additional courses in the Deficiency Program depending upon their graduated program and the research field that they have to be involved in,  as advised by the Doctorate Committee of the program.

In the selection of the courses, maximum four courses can be from the same department.

The courses that should be taken by all the students accepted to the Doctorate Program and successful in the Deficiency Program are given below:

 

Must Courses:

  • NSNT 501 Introduction to Computational Neuroscience
  • NSC 701 Basic Neurosciences/ BIO 716 Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology
  • NSC 731 Neurophysiopathology
  • NSC 743 Neuropharmacology
  • NSC 761 Seminar I *
  • CEIT 520 Research Methods and Ethics**

(*)This course is a course of Hacettepe University and is accepted as a non-credit course at METU. "NSC 762 Seminar II" and "NSC 763 Seminar III" courses at Hacettepe University are the equivalent of this course. 

(**) This course is a course with credit. Students can take following courses instead of CEIT 520: BIOL 588 (non-credit), PHYS 599 (non- credit), or NSC 752 (with credit). However, students who take a non-credit ethics course must take an additional elective course to complete the course load.

If some of these courses were taken previously then with the advise of the supervisor other courses can be selected from Table A.

 

Elective Courses

  • Those students who are accepted to the PhD program with a MS degree must take four (4) elective courses from Table A with a consideration of equality of the two universities with respect to the the number of courses taken from each university and taking into account the previously taken courses. Also with the advice of the supervisors, student can take other courses that are beneficial for their research topics that are opened in different departments of the two universities.
  • Those students who are accepted to the PhD program with a BS degree must take 11 (eleven) elective courses from Table A with a consideration of equality of the two universities with respect to the the number of courses taken from each university and taking into account the previously taken courses. Also with the advice of the supervisors, student can take other courses that are beneficial for their research topics that are opened in different departments of the two universities.

  • NSNT 600  PhD Thesis
  • NSNT 9xx/TNB7xx  Special Studies in Neuroscience and Neurotechnology
